It's that Spam again. A number of our customers are seeing their contact form being used by spammers.
IS YOUR CONTACT FORM BEING HIJACKED BY SPAMMERS?
If you have a form on your web site, it's there to enable potential customers to contact you. These forms are a very useful asset to a web site and can also increase customer confidence. Howerver, they are Increasingly being used by spammers to hawk their wares - from rolex watches to marital aids.
Non human senders
Generally speaking, these forms are not being filled in by human users. The spammers are using software that automatically fills in the form and then triggers the send button. Our forms usually have code to make this more difficult, but as the spamming software becomes more sophisicated, this code becomes less effective.
The next stage in spam prevention - Captcha images
Web site forms can now use a system called 'Captcha' to foil the spammers. On the form you see an image of some letters or numbers. These letters or numbers must be copied into one of the form fields in order to submit the form. Most spamming software cannot determine the content of an image so won't know how to fill in this field correctly.
This sounds very simple, but the web site must be able to create the random images on demand. For a simple 4 number code, there are obviously 9999 different images that could be displayed so the web server creates these images on demand.
SiteWeave are now offering this Captcha form protection for any of your existing forms.
How to I get Captcha protection on my web site?
Captcha protection costs £40 per form. This is a one-off payment and once the code and image generation software is in place it becomes part of your web site. Additional forms protected at the same time can be added at a cost of £25 per form.
Drop us an email or give us a ring and we will add this technology to your form. If you have several forms please let us know which ones to include.
Please note that as this software is licenced to SiteWeave, it cannot be retained in the event that you move the site to another provider
Do I need to bother?
It's entirely up to you. This technology is designed to filter spam at source rather than dealing with it once it arrives at your mailbox. Some people feel that the Captcha images add a degree of professionalism but this is a personal call.
