A stable economy is not news, but a recession is a journalist's dream. If the pundits, egged on by journalists keep up their scare mongering a recession is becoming more and more likely. Economics is largely about confidence and journalists are playing a big part in shaking our confidence.
If the doom mongers get their way, where will that leave your business and your web site?
Retract or Attack?
In hard times, it suits some businesses to pull in their horns, and others to go on the attack - striving to maintain their market position. If your business is going on the attack, your web site should be considered as an important weapon. Both edges of the website sword will need sharpening:
Effectiveness: Improve the effectiveness of your web site (attractiveness, ease of use, user experience)
Search Position: Improve your position on the search pages for your chosen search terms
Below are a couple of very cost effective ideas for improving your search engine positioning
Write one or more Articles about your industry sector
A number of our SEO (search engine optimisation) clients have benefitted from article linking. Basically, the web owner writes an article about an aspect of their business and sends it to SiteWeave. We then edit that article to optimise it for the target search terms and finally publish the article on specialist web sites that provide links back to our client's web site, thus improving 'imbound linking', an important aspect of SEO.
The article is also added to the client's own web site thus improving content and local SEO. The overall effect can prove very beneficial to search engine ranking.
But I can't write an article! You probably don't realise the expertise you have in your sector. People tend that take their knowledge for granted. A SiteWeave client in Northants in the powder coating business (metal surface treatment) felt this way but was surprised how much they knew. SiteWeave cleaned up and adjusted the wording and submitted the article as part of an SEO push. This was one of the contributing factors in getting them to Google page one for 'powder coating midlands' and 'powder coating east midlands'.
Articles typically contain 250 to 500 words - for more information see our website page on article writing or give us a ring.
Add your web site to business directories - do it yourself
When another web site links to your web site, it can improve your search position on Google. The linking web site must itself have a good ranking and must contain similar search terms to your web site.
To obtain these links yourself - enter your search terms into Google and note which web site are directory web sites (that is - a site that just lists or promotes other web sites) Many of these directory web sites will offer a free listing. If you are allowed to add your own phrasing, make sure you include the search terms your are interested in - these are in fact more important than your company name.
SiteWeave can carry our directory linking if required, but it is quite easy to do and is something that someone in your office could be doing in spare moments.
Lastly - Webmail - a much better and more useful service than before
Your have probably used webmail in the past - a handy way of reading or sending your email using any computer from any location. You may however have found it rather limiting. However, our free webmail service is now much improved - it keeps copies of your sent messages, allows your build up a list of contacts, organise your folders, etc. In fact, our webmaiil service can now do nearly everything that you can do with Outlook Express. See more about webmail improvements on our website.
If you haven't used webmail before - it is very easy. Open Internet Explorer / Firefox / etc, go to 'webmail.yourdomainname.com' and then log in. You will need the first part of your email address (eg. 'enquiries') and your password. Note that this service is only available if your have a POP3 email box - it does not work if you just use a forwarding address (if your email address forwards to a Hotmail account or other email address not connected with your domain name)
Thank you for taking the time our of your busy day to read this newsletter.
Wishing you success in these uncertain times.
